Middle School Days ("TATENOKAWA" Newspaper 11/06/2012)

I went to a local middle school, in the town of Hirata (now Sakata City) which is famous for the Hiraboku Corporation.

At that time, there were 3 classes of 30 people per school year. Continuing on from Elementary School, I didn't hesitate to enter the school baseball club. I didn’t have any other clubs in mind, but it was at a time when the 'J-league' had just started and kicked off a football boom across the country so the football club was exceptionally popular. The football club was full of joker type problem kids but then the same could also be said about the baseball club. Both clubs shared the same grounds — the sight of the football club dribbling right in front of the left and centre fielders was a regular daily occurrence. My position in the baseball team was 3rd batter but wins in games were hard to come by and by my 3rd Year, much to my chagrin, I had achieved only one victory.

Oh, but they were fun days. In my 3rd Year, my teacher put me in the running for student principal and before I knew what was happening they had chosen me for the role. The role of policing the school rules was given to the most unruly student in the entire school so I think our student council was, what one might say, somewhat interesting or even unheard of. Despite the fact that one of the executives was an undesirable friend from baseball club, we all worked together on the school functions and I was able to experience a profoundly different kind of recreation to the club activities.

If there was one thing I really hated it was the Monday morning school assembly. That is because the student principal had to stand up and say something. I ended up skipping it many times, but I am sure there must be something in that relatively limited experience that I now use in my management role at this company —I wonder if that is true…. After all, I was never really very responsible.

I wonder how everyone else spent their middle school years?
